Did you
know? As
a result
of the action
taken by
the Western
States Governors’ Conference,
Congress
passed new
legislation
that allows
federal
agencies
the ability
to treat
the forest
in the vicinity
of communities
at risk
of a wildfire. This
is called
the National
Fire Plan.
The August
17, 2001
edition
of the Federal
Register
identified
the City
of Big Bear
Lake and
Big Bear
City as
communities
at high
risk from
a wildfire.
Big Bear
Valley has
not seen
extensive
devastation
as other
mountain
communities
have, where
reportedly
up to 90%
tree stand
mortality
has occurred.
Although
we have
seen tree
mortality,
a large
portion
of our urban
forest landscape
has survived
and is increasing
in vitality. |
